Album Review: Cobra Starship - ¡Viva La Cobra!

Who is Cobra Starship?  Well, you probably know their song "Bring It (Snakes On A Plane)" from, you guessed it, the movie Snakes On A Plane (think of the music video that played during the closing credits).  Their first album, While The City Sleeps, We Rule The Streets, is definitely awesome (as Bob will attest to).  Their sound is basically "dance rock" and the first album was supposed to summarize a night out with friends, which it did very well.  Whenever I hear that album I feel like I should drop whatever I'm doing and go out partying, even if I'm already out partying.

I recently purchased ¡Viva La Cobra! and I have to say, it's a pretty good album.  It also goes for that "going out with friends" feel, but you don't necessarily feel like you're drinking in a strip club (like you do with the first album).  Underneath the catchy tunes and ridiculously long track names, ¡Viva La Cobra! has a bit more substance than the first album.  The lyrics are satirical and biting in places; the band obviously wanted a bit more of a meaning with this album.  So what is the meaning?  Well, basically the gist is that flashy, plastic, superficial people (male, female, celebrities, nobodies, it doesn't matter) are the scum of the earth and there is more to life and existence than being tan and smiling for the cameras.  How about that!

One of the tracks, "Kiss My Sass", starts with the line "I'm bringing sassy back", which is an obvious parody of JT's ubiquitous "I'm bringing sexy back".  And the song "Damn You Look Good And I'm Drunk (Scandalous)" features Gabe (the driving force behind Cobra Starship) spelling out S-C-A-N-D-A-L-O-U-S over an exaggerated Marc Anthony-sounding pop song, a clear jab at Fergie's "Glamorous".  Here's a choice lyrical selection from the song:

Time to get a tan, it's half off if you bring a friend
And get them crazy press-on nails
Here's the truth, you're kind of hot
But when you open up to talk, I can feel I'm going soft

Don't ask me to sign your skin
Can't you see these little kids?
You're the kind of girl to take home to mom, if my momma was dead!

Oh yeah, he went there.

The album has nice melody, great beats, a bit of dance, a bit of rock, and a bit of mockery of fake, trivial bimbos.  And there are at least a couple references to "Fangs up!" and "cobra style".  What more could you ask for?

If you'd like to hear the album, go to Cobra Starship's web site:
