Foo Fighters - Echoes, Silence, Patience, and Grace Album Review

Foo Fighters Echoes, Silence, Patience, and GraceThe Foo Fighters released their 6th studio album entitled Echoes, Silence, Patience, and Grace. The first single "The Pretender" has been making it's rounds on Top 40 and Mainstream Rock Radio for about two months now. But is that the only good song on an album of 14 songs? The answer is yes!

Let's get my love of the Foo Fighters out of the way right now. I love them. I think they are great live and have had a solid musical output over their career. The sound hasn't really changed over the span of the albums, which is good.

I was worried after the Foo's double album "In Your Honor." (That was the album that was half electric, half acoustic.) I was worried that with the success of that album, the Foos would take that to mean "More acoustic." Well, I was right.

I will run through the tracklisting and add a few thoughts on each song:

The Pretender - The best song on the album. This will song is typical Foo Fighters and holds up as a classic.

Let It Die - The song starts out slow and then breaks into the same riff from "All My Life" from the album One By One. It is a good song, but ultimately forgettable.

Erase/Replace - This might be the next single. It is the second best song on the album, but it's no comparison to The Pretender.

Long Road to Ruin - There is nothing exciting about this song. It isn't a bad song, but it lacks something.

Come Alive - This is the first, almost all acoustic song on the album. It builds from acoustic to an electric crescendo that is as inspiring as your grandmother dropping her pants to show you her "deli." You just can't get excited about that.

Stranger Things Have Happened - Another acoustic song. It would be perfect for a hangover on Sunday afternoons, but I was sober while listening to it and wanted to "emo" myself.

Cheer Up, Boys - This song had a good grunge start then dropped back to the typical Foo Fighters sound. It is good, but again, it just isn't as solid as In Your Honor.

Summer's End - This is Dave's attempt at a southern ballad and it sucks as hard as a Southerner sucking on his sister's teat.

Ballad of the Beaconsfield Miners - This song might have a story behind it, but it is just instrumental. It is utter crap and it is filler...as if a crap needs more filler.

Statues - Boring, banal, insipid, blaze (I am running out of synonyms for boring)

But, honestly - Acoustic start, crescendos to an electric and repetitive end. Boring!

Home - Dave plays only the piano on this song and once again it bores me. I would rather listen to my cat pissing in his litter box than this song.

Once and For All (Demo) - This sounds like a retooled 30 Seconds To Mars riff from the song 'The Kill.' The sad thing is the demo is better than 98% of this album.

Seda - This song sounds like it could have been written by Johnny Cash (not lyrically). It has a good groove, but overall it is boring.

After hearing The Pretender I was excited for this Foo Fighters album. I wanted this album to continue the electric songs they created on In Your Honor. They didn't. The entire album is just uninspiring and overall BORING. If you can get your hands on this album for free, please do. It isn't worth $9.99. Actually, it is only worth .99c for the song "The Pretender."
